A Smartphone For All
With so many phones in the market it often gets difficult to choose which one to buy. While Apple and OnePlus are known for their high-end devices, Xiaomi continues to impress with its budget smartphones. In last three years in India, Xiaomi has launched several bestselling budget smartphones. The company's latest launch is the Redmi 5A which was available for purchase in the first week of December 2017. Although the Redmi 5A doesn’t offer anything extra than 4A, it is an excellent value-for-money smartphone.
What The Device Offers
The compact Redmi 5A is not much different from Redmi 4A and is all plastic, although the faux metallic finish at the back makes for a fair design choice. It weighs only 137 grams with a thickness of 8.35 mm, and definitely feels lighter than some of the other phones in the segment. There is a camera at the back with an LED Flash next to it, Sim and microSD slots on the left and power key and volume rockers on the right. There is a micro USB port at the bottom while the upper edge sports a headphone jack. The smartphone comes with pre-loaded Microsoft Apps as well as MIUI’s own set of apps which are most certainly useful for on-the-go workers. Extra functions like Second Space, Dual Apps, Split screen, Gesture Shortcuts as well further increase the ease of use. Xiaomi has downsized the battery on the Redmi 5A to a 3000 mAh capacity, but it is still good enough and can easily take more than a day’s work on it. Xiaomi claims an impressive 8 day standby time on this smartphone.
Take Your Experience A Notch Higher
The Redmi 5A experience can be further enhanced with a few changes and tweaks just like any other smartphone.
1. Customize the Notification Panel
Incoming notifications can be customized as per your choice. If you'd like the notifications from a particular app to be at the top then you can assign that app the highest priority.
To do this, head over to the Notifications & status bar settings > App Notifications and tap on that particular app name, which will take you to the settings page for that app. Once there, toggle the Priority switch to On.
2. Switch to Reading Mode
Our smartphones do so many tasks for us and that makes us depend greatly on them. But so much dependency also has its consequences. Excessive use can lead to headaches, sore eyes or other minor health issues. That is why Redmi 5A has a special Reading mode to reduce the blue-light emission of the phone and to add a yellowish hue to the display.
You can also schedule it for a particular time when you wish to use your phone as an ebook reader.
3. Use It As An IR Remote
Redmi 5A has an Infrared sensor, which means that you can use it as a universal remote. The remote app comes with a number of profiles of Indian companies. All you have to do is set the Mi Remote app up, tap on the Add remote button and choose the components as required.
